Daeseungsa Temple[4k]

I am Buddist monk, Moo Yeo. I visited Daeseungsa Temple.
Daeseungsa Temple is located in Mungyeong-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, South Korea.

TV : Nice to meet you. Beautiful temple trip, I will start today with a joyful and happy heart.

Where does all the disaster come from? The scripture said, "All disasters come from the mouth."

Words can save people, words can kill people. That's why you have to be careful with a word.
다.
Why don't you say words that save others, hope and courage in times of hardship?

Today, I came to the temple with the hope of comfort and consolation.

This is Daeseungsa Temple in Sabulsan Mountain in Mungyeong, Gyeongsangbuk-do.

Daeseungsa Temple is said to have been founded by the spiritual patriarch, Undal in the 9th year of King Jinpyeong's reign (587) in Silla.

Both the Amrita and the poison are in the human tongue. The Amrita is true words, lies are poison.

If anyone needs the Amrita, say the truth. If you need poison, lie to yourself.

Poison do not necessarily kill people, but lies can surely kill people.

Lying is not only harmful to oneself, but also to others.

Why do you lie when you and the other party are not happy?

If you walk up the mountain path, you will see an old stone pagoda.

It is called the Stone Pagoda of the Goryeo Dynasty. It's broken a lot.

As for the origin of Daeseungsa Temple, the Memorabilia of the Three Kingdoms is said to be as follows.

“There's a mountain peak high up about a hundred li east of Jukryeong Pass.

In the year of Gapsin (the 9th year of King Jinpyeong's reign), about three meters sized stone, carved with four-sided Buddhas wrapped in red silk came down from heaven to the top of the mountain.

When the king heard this, he went on a cart to worship, and he built a temple near the rock to call it Daeseungsa Temple.

The king called in a Buddhist monk that recite the Lotus Sutra to keep the temple under control.

After cleaning the surrounding area, bowed to stone carved with four-sided Buddhas and continued to burn incense.

This mountain was called Yeokdeoksan Mountain or Sabulsan Mountain. It is said that lotus flowers bloomed on the tomb after the death of the Buddhist monk.”

You can see Baekryundang Hall first when you enter Daeseungsa Temple.

This is Baekryundang Hall which was restored in 2009.

If you go up the stairs, you can see Manseru Pavilion.

A large bowl is only used to great use; a small bowl is for small use.

Each bowl, big or small, has its own role.

A good carpenter never throws away trees, whether large or small.

Therefore, a good carpenter uses any tree well.

There is nothing good or bad.

Good things can be used in good condition, and bent things can be used for good purposes.

Noh Ju pillar is Tangible Cultural Heritage No. 407.

This is Noh Ju pillar in front of Daeungjeon Hall.

It is said that the use of Noh Ju pillar was to warm the surrounding area by lighting fires or making fire during the night Dharma meeting of the temple.

A square pillar is placed on a square-shaped base stone, and a fire pit is placed on top of a square pillar.

The inscription, "The 7th year of Emperor Ongjeong’s reign” indicates that this Noh Ju pillar was made in 1729 (the 5th year of King Yeongjo's reign).

Most of the pavilions, including Daeungjeon Hall, were burnt down in 1956 and rebuilt in the 1960s.

Daeungjeon Hall consists of 3 kan wide by 3 kan deep with a multi complex bracket between columns, hip-and-gable roof of a double eaves.

The wood carving Amitabha is National Treasure No. 321.

The wood carving Amitabha is the oldest wood carving sculpture, carved on the wooden board instead of the hanging a Buddhist painting.

Produced in 1675, this wood carving Amitabha Buddha is a pioneering work of wood carving that combines Buddhist paintings and sculptures.

This wood carving Amitabha was originally located in the Muryangsujeon Hall of Buseoksa Temple in Yeongju, but it was said that in 1862 (the 13th year of King Cheoljong's reign), when a huge fire broke out in Daeseungsa Temple, the temple was burnt down, and a new temple was rebuilt, and the wooden carving Amitabha of Buseoksa Temple was moved to this place.

Later, Buseoksa Temple demanded the return of the wooden carving Amitabha, causing a fierce dispute, which led to file a deungjang.

The deungjang is a type of complaint filed during the Joseon Dynasty, which is a document that is certified by the administrative office by writing down the names of several people.

In 1876 (the 13th year of King Gojong's reign), it was agreed to write the wan-ui paper to pay for the repair of Buseoksa Temple's Josadang Shrine instead of the return of the wood carving Amitabha.

The wan-ui is a document that records the agreement reached at the conclusion of the dispute between the two temples. All four documents were designated as Treasure No. 575.

The large pavilion right next to Daeungjeon Hall is Daeseung Seon Monastery.

Daeseung Seon Monastery is hung with two signboards, 天降四佛 and 地聳雙蓮.

Four Buddhas came down from the sky.

Two lotus flowers rose from the ground.

The two signboards are the handwriting of Mr. Bae Gil-gi (1917-1999).

The original name of Daeseung Seon Monastery was Ssangryeon Seon Monastery. It is said that the Ssangryeon Seon Monastery was renamed Daeseung Seon Monastery in 1995 when the spiritual master Wolsan stayed in Daeseungsa Temple.

The signboard of Daeseung Seon Monastery is the handwriting of the spiritual master Wolsan.

Daeseung Seon Monastery is a building with 8 kan side, hip-and-gable roof and was built by Kwon Sang-ro in the 1960s.

All Seon Monastery follow very strict rules and a rigorous practice schedule during summer and winter retreats, each of which lasts three months.

In Daeseungsa Temple, many great monks, including Cheongdam and Seongcheol who got a vigorous meditation.

Even now, many Buddhist monks are making vigorous meditation.

The gilt-bronze seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of Daeseungsa Temple is Treasure No. 991.

The gilt-bronze seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, which was built in the late 15th century inside the Daeseung Seon Monastery, has a colorful metal crown on its head, and the hair on both ears, covers its shoulders, while the middle of the forehead is decorated with a thin white urna.

The features are well-defined, with slightly short on both ears and clearness of the three lines the neck.

Myeongbujeon Hall was an unburned hall when a big fire broke out in 1956. You can see the style of wooden architecture in the late Joseon Dynasty.

Inside the Myeongbujeon Hall, with Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva in middle, his attendants Min Gong on the left side and Dao Ming on the right side.

Ksitigarbha painting of the inside of Myeongbujeon Hall is Cultural Heritage Material No. 545.

Ksitigarbha painting was made in 1876.

In the center of the screen, there is Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, on the left and right sides of Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva are the ten kings of the nether world, the judge, the messenger, and the prison guard.

And at the top of the screen, there are six bodhisattvas symmetrically positioned around Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva.

The omission of prominent colors and patterns, and the expression of shaded folds of clothing, represent the stylistic characteristics of Buddhist paintings in the late 19th century.

The Gilt-bronze Amitabha Buddha in the Hall of Utmost Bliss is Treasure No. 1634.

The Gilt-bronze Amitabha Buddha, which was built in the late Goryeo Dynasty, is well-formed and well-preserved.

The long face, chubby cheeks, half-closed eyes, straight nose, and slightly raised lips reveal the stylistic features of the late Goryeo Dynasty, following the tradition of Buddha statues in the mid-Goryeo Period.

The main Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and the left and right sides of Amitabha Buddha are Avalokitesvara and Mahasthamaprapta.

You've been looking around Daeseungsa Temple. How was it everyone?

To do Seon or meditation is to see yourself right away.

“If a man were to conquer in battle a thousand times a thousand men, and another conquer one, himself, he indeed is the greatest of conquerors.

Conquest of self is indeed better than the conquest of other persons;

of one who has disciplined himself, who always practises self-control.

Not even a god nor a gandharva* nor Mara along with Brahma* could turn into defeat the victory of such a one (who has conquered himself).”

He who has ruled himself well in any hardship, and he must have been doing a meditation retreat for three months to look into his heart.

It's important to meet enlightened ones and the right Dharma brothers in performing.

In order to do that, you need to be blessed.

Thank you so much for joining me on this beautiful temple trip, and I will be back with a better video next time.

Have a nice day every day.~
