Camera Lens Hoods - Explained

Camera lens hoods in photography might seem a simple thing, but can be very confusing for the beginner photographer. What are lens hoods for? Why use a lens hood? Do you need one? When do you use one? What lens hood should you buy for your lens? These are just some of the questions we get asked. So here, I’m going to answer all these questions for you to make sure you get the best results in your photography and are using the correct one for your lens.

Tod W : for years I've been wondering why petal lens hoods were suddenly attached to every image of DSLRs splattered all over the net. I thought it was some marketeer's idea of a 21st C modern design with a touch of Pablo Picasso. You succinctly explained what type of lens should use a petal hood, and why. For that one tidbit, I thank you x1000! Also, just subscribed. I will look into your school offer.
Christopher C : Lens flaring and contrast reduction from it is an odd thing. Actually fairly difficult to intentionally induce these effects with modern lenses, but when they do show up, it’s at some awfully inconvenient times. Interestingly, the lens that always has its hood on (Samyang 35mm F2.8) is also the one I have the most trouble reigning in flaring.

Definitely a conundrum. I definitely appreciate a minimalist kit, however, if I can get a decisive and consistent benefit from using the hoods, then I’d probably want to use them.
Phil Harris : If the internal flash is used, a shadow is created typically on the bottom of the picture. Best to remove it or reverse mount it. If you still want to use the lens shade, use an external or off camera flash.
Armando R. Venegas Atencio : I noticed you made your very useful explanation about Lens hoods with Full Format Digital cameras.
But... Do you consider Lens hoods are equally effective for reducing Lens Flare on APS-C Camera lenses?
Thank you very much for your answer!
IncrediKAD76 : I'm that guy who has been going through many many YouTube channels trying to learn photography. And to be totally upfront and honest I think my journey ends and begins here with the School of photography. I have learned a great deal on my own but not enough to truly understand what I am doing. This channel and their website has lot's of helpful freebie material BUT what I admire most is the clear and concise information. When Marc is speaking on a particular subject he goes all in. I greatly appreciate the honestly and the awesome hands-on, real-time comparisons. His method of teaching Photography is the best I have seen. Once again, I have spent HOURS in YouTube videos listening to people just to be left with MORE questions. That doesn't happen with this instructor Marc. I
I get it the 1st time around. He is very thorough. Watch his freebie vids I mentioned above and see for yourself. FYI I am in no means affiliated with School of photography. I support real people and I am signing up for the courses after I leave this comment.

Why I stopped using Lens Hoods...

This week I talk about why I rarely use lens hoods for my photography anymore, while taking pictures at blue hour here in Snowdonia, Wales. A also talk a bit again about why I don't like long exposures...

FightingPinguin : Next: why i stopped using lenses. XD
Connor Parkinson : Absolutely hooked on this channel, cheers for the advice and entertainment James keep it up :)
arcanics1971 : I've got to say I love lens flares- not all the time, but occasionally. I often use my vintage Praktica tele zoom or my Helios 44/2 to capture flare intentionally. It doesn't always work, but sometimes it's beautiful.
Johan van der Merwe : Difference in long exposure and imperfections to me is stark. Although we can argue that both reminds you that you are looking at a photo, the long exposure is unrealistic, whereas the imperfect reflection in your example, takes me right into the photo, making me wonder what giant ghost farted in that particular corner of the lake.
Jokes aside, what an incredibly beautiful location and fantastic photos. Love your channel and your advice and opinions are well appreciated.
phil doodler : Yes, I'm a big fan of imperfect photos. That's why I like all my photos - they're all imperfect.

Sony FDR-AX33 Handycam Lens Hood, 52mm Mennon 16:9

A perfect wide angle, 16:9, len hood for the Sony for-ax33 video camera.
Dont need up ring, just straight 52mm hood.
CCV TV : Thanks for the video. I just bought this camera and that was the only thing that I did not like was not having a lens hood. It does help with sun glare etc, but the lens hood also makes the camera look more professional when shooting at business and so on. Can you please share the link with us to order the exact same setup as you did for this to work? I'd like to order mine this week. thank you and happy holidays.
CastFromTheHip : Very helpful, thanks!
Gary Pranzo : Pretty sure that is too small to work with the BOSS stabilization on. The BOSS is the reason to own this camera and the ax53. I would go at least 58mm step up and I am told even at 58mm you get a tiny bit of vignetting with stabilization on, seems like 72mm is the sweet spot. I use 72mm for flower hood on my ax53 and I still have to keep turned a certain to 100% eliminate the vignetting.
Jonjon H2755 : thank you for the information !
Adrian Hennessy : Just wondering what the mic is that you have attached there? Thanks.
