Troy Fankell : I was curious about doing block measurements with a torque plate, because I see more than nominal but under the limit on new to near-new EJ blocks in taper and out-of-round. The factory manual doesn't specify but I have thought it would be better to do so.

BrendaEM : There may be more to it. The studs may also pull the cylinder out of round.
An interesting test would be to use a (milling) coaxial-type indicator or a test indicator on a swinging mount, set to be concentric with the bore. The cylinder can be measured, recorded and a map or drawing could be done, with and without the torque plate fastened down.
A felt-tipped marking pen can be used to make marks the bore near where the readings are taken.

@Marko-JZX100 : Was kinda waiting for measurement differences with and without torque plate. Last 1JZ I did was bored with torque plate, and yes it runs perfectly with zero blow by. Unfortunately did not have proper tools in the home garage at that time to measure the block bores before machining and after. Just gave the block and torque plate to the machine shop, and they did all the work. They even said the plate was useless, as they have tested them before on many inline4 and 6 engine blocks, and could not justify the ever slight difference it made. Don't know how true that is....today everything sells in the motorsport and performance industry if the marketing of the products is *right*.
@conradsealy9603 : I think its a good idea on any engine that is being modded. I had a torque plate done for the SR. The machine shop liked it so much they call me to rent it anytime they do a SR block now.
