As usual Amazon delivered this on time and in good condition.Ive used a variety of amps, DACs, and amp/dac combos over the years but this little piece of kit is probably best bang-for-buck considering how portable and versatile it is.I use it hooked up to a Macbook Pro running Mojave (version 10.14.2) and running my music through Audirvana +.
No need to update the drivers just yet - plug and play worked perfectly. I had it up and running about 30 secs after I opened the box.
This little black box has enough juice for my Audeze LCD2Cs as well as my other headphones, some with higher impedance and sensitivity.
Its not the most powerful amp as it is USB-powered but I rarely get above the 10 oclock on the dial for the volume control.Sound is open, rhythmic, and detailed.
Some details come through on the edge of the soundstage that I wasnt getting clearly before. Added bonus of being able to through DSD files at it too which the HP-A4 handles.
Thriller on DSD is magical.9.5/10.
The Fostex HP-A4 is my first introduction to an AMP/DAC combo thats worth a damn and im liking this side of the fence. Right now im using this AMP with the Philips SHP9500s and im pretty happy.
This AMP is powered via USB but dont let that fool you - the volume can get to ear bleed levels. Ive got the Fostex Massdrop TH-x00s on the way and cant wait to see how the pair will mate.

I purchased this DAC/AMP on eBay for $250 (after ebay bucks it cost me $120) new. I am running the USB cable from my MBP retina to the HP-A4 and then analog cables to my Audioengine A2+ speakers.
This dac/amp has improved my music so much with my Audioengine speakers...I cannot stress how much better the speakers sound. They sounded great before, but now theyre another step better.
It is like there is more separation between the instruments and the overall soundstage has been expanded. In terms of the headphone output I am powering Grados GS1000i statement series headphones.
I have mixed feelings thus far about the headphone amp part...I have only had the Grados for a few weeks and I was using my HTC one M8 to power the headphones and it was great!
The headphones were extremely musical but rather unforgiving in terms that after a few hours my ears were hurting especially on high-frequency songs. However with this headphone amp, the Grados sound much different, but I think it is for the better.
I just have to acclimate to the sound signature I think.
