Chinese HL-340 USB to RS-232 Converter (CH340 Chip) Review

Well, it’s dirt cheap, but not really a USB to RS-232 converter …

It did work with the RS-232 port of my OWON P4305 power supply (the one with the dead LCD) right away. But I was a little suspicious because there was nothing inside it besides a chip and maybe a capacitor. So I broke out the oscilloscope.

Turns out it’s just a CH340 USB to serial converter. Signal levels and rise/fall times are not RS-232 compliant and it wouldn’t survive talking to a real RS-232 device. Side note: The OWON P4304 makes an effort, but it’s also not RS-232 compliant.
