Sorel Caribou Boot Review - The Sorel Caribou Boot is rumored to be the best winter boot but all of the reviews of Sorel on YouTube are far from positive so why don't people like the caribou boot? S/V Sayonara : I have a pair that I bought probably 35 years ago - they've had hours and hours and hours of cold hard use and are still great. Sad to see an iconic Canadian brand go downhill.
Dave Engstrom : This is a great review. I was planning on getting a pair, but not now. If Columbia changed the design, they should be ashamed. People DEPEND on good quality in some climates. People can freeze and lose their feet with crappy boots. If those decisions were made for PROFITS those people have no soul.
BullBars1 : When Sorel was made in Canada, they were the best winter boots I'd ever worn. Since the sales of the company, they have become just crappy synthetic boots definitely not worth $150.oo. The original Blizzard boots I bought had a steel toe and were still the warmest boots I've ever owned. They also lasted close to 10 yrs of everyday use in winter. I'll never buy another pair now that they aren't made in Canada and don't have half the quality.
Jerry Vitsentzatos : Natural rubber on the original boots is superior to the synthetic lower used today. My 30 y/o boot has no sign of cracking. The 100% wool lining is also better. I would never buy another pair of Sorels. Watched friends boots fall apart over the years. Big question is if Columbia produces a genuinely comparable boot to the original caribou, is the consumer willing to pay $400-500 for the pair. I know I am. It would be the last pair I bought.
Today's disposable society has destroyed most products. Shame.
Em J : When doing burn tests, I'd suggest swatching them, so taking a chunk out to test, for wool you're looking for three things:
1) wool won't "catch" so when you take the flame away, it won't continue to burn
2) like you said, smell of burning hair
3) fabric will char and you'll get a chunky ash.

Doing smell tests one after the other without swatching means you're still kind of smelling the other samples, especially with strong smells like burning plastic or burning hair, swatched fabrics you can remove and isolate the samples.

Guy M Lasley : -40 Fahrenheit is actually the same as -40 Celsius. I know it seems weird but it is correct. (-40°F − 32) × 5/9 = -40°C

mwilliamshs : The 20 minute heat retention test was actually a test of how much heat the boots and the air they contained absorbed from the rice-filled socks. A better test would be to heat the boots and socks too 95° degrees, insert the socks, expose boots and socks to cold, then remove and measure the temperature of the socks. 95° is a more realistic body temperature and starting with warm boots simulates real-world conditions. The boots and socks will be at the same temperature so the boots won't be absorbing heat from the socks and their ability to retain heat will really be tested. A prolonged test with remote temperature sensors inside the boots with an established low-point will account for each boot's different thermal mass.
George Bulbakwa : The -40 isn't a typo. That's the point that the two temperature scales intersect. -40C is equal to -40F.
Jon Furse : I've had a pair of Kamiks, probably the older version of the ones tested here, for about 15 years and they have performed flawlessly even in very wet or subzero conditions. Even before I started wearing wool socks, my feet were always very comfortable in them.

Ron Adams : Ever since they were sold to Columbia in 2000 the quality has been on the decline. Sorel is no longer a Canadian company unfortunately. My old felt packs from the 90’s were warm even down to -40c just sitting around ice fishing. My feet were never cold. Sorry you had to learn the hard way Lars. Cheers from Canada.

Wayne The Seine : I love the fact we can always count on an honest opinion from you Lars. When you pushed on the sole of the boot it really deflected a lot as if they were thin and made of some funky material. I suspect the sole material is much of the problem.....maybe conducting the cold with little or no resistance to it.
