This video shows a very simple modification that you can make to a light that takes a 230W or 300W linear halogen bulb.\r
\r
Halogen lamps are extremely inefficient, so there is a significant cost to their use. This 5 minute mod will show you how to retrofit a state-of-the-art high efficiency technology bulb.\r
\r
In this video, I install a linear metal halide lamp (for better brightness, better light quality and better lamp life - you can use a "ceramic metal halide" bulb - these are a bit more expensive, but come up on ebay fairly regularly for a very low cost).\r
\r
The lamp used is a:\r
70 W Rx7S double-ended metal halide [this type of bulb will fit in a normal 230/300 W halogen fitting], made by BLV. It has a "4000K neutral white" colour.\r
\r
Any metal halide or ceramic metal halide, as long as it is 70 W double ended Rx7S should work. They are available in 3000K "warm white" (a very good match for normal halogens), as well as 5500-6500K "daylight simulation", 8000-20000K "blue white" and a number of primary colours (blue, green, orange, pink).\r
\r
The ballast is a Philips HID-PV C 070/I CDM, 70W electronic ballast. Almost any 70W electronic metal halide/ceramic metal halide ballast should work.\r
\r
Ceramic metal halide lamps, if you can get them, are the most efficient white lighting available. Far more efficient than LEDs and compact fluorescents (while producing a much more pleasant light), and significantly more efficient than linear fluorescent striplights.
