Just Saying : Trying to enjoy soccer. I'm in awe of the fitness, talent, and skill of these world class athletes. Not much more thrilling than a corner kick in 1 - nil match in injury time.
Where I need help is not in the set pieces, but in general play. There should be 2 teams on the pitch, and each team should be playing the other. Where it breaks down for me is here . . . there are in reality 3 teams on the pitch and each team is contesting against 2 opponents. The 3 teams are Team A, Team B, and the Referee.
At every close contest for possession the unsuccessful player drops like a sack of hammerheads as if stepping on a landmine. He then rolls about grabbing his lower appendages as if his femur were shattered. Replay almost always shows a graze or benign contact. Who is he playing at this point? The Referee. Begging a call. Often this despicable display is rewarded with a stoppage and change of possession. Then the gut shot player miraculously recovers and is next seen making a blistering run down the touch line and into space. Integrity please!
This "playing the Referee" rather than "playing the opposition" ruins the beautiful game for me and relegates it to a great game for children. I know you're going to rebut that all sports do this, but I assert that it doesn't happen nearly as frequently in other games, nor does it affect the course of play or even outcome of a match nearly as blatantly as in soccer.
I was a rugby referee for years and I encountered this 3 team phenomenon on occasion. When a player was obviously playing me I warned him once. The next time I yellow carded him and he sat in the sin bin between the posts for 10 minutes. Cleaned it up real quick.
Why do soccer referees sit on their yellow cards and reward childish behavior to the point that flagrant diving ruins the integrity of the contest?
