RadRich : What makes this camera almost perfect for anamorphic video (especially for B roll) is that it shoots 1440 x 1080 (4:3) coupled with my existing Sankor 16c 2x anamorphic lens with the 40.5mm back thread - this adapter fits perfectly on Sony's 16-50mm kit lens (has a 40.5mm filter thread). No anamorphic lens adapter or step down rings necessary. Only issue is that it doesn't shoot 24 fps. In case anyone was curious what a Sankor 16c looks like: https://bityl.co/3KoL
AceOfSevens : These things aren't reliable. I bought an NEX 5R in 2014 & it lasted a little over a year before the shutter failed. Repair would have cost over $200, which is about what a used camera went for by then.
Money Pits : Mic is not that bad either.

Prado Mike : You can add directional microphone, electronic view finder or flash to the nex-5r.
Hologram : I was always looking for a good, high quality but relative inexpensive setup and you showed me that you not have to spend nearly 1 thousand dollars or even more!

I always get asked "what is the best entry level camera for filmmaking". Here's my answer. I think at the moment the best value for the money is the Sony NEX5R. The reasons are simple. It's the cheapest HDSLR at the moment (around $500) that can also shoot full 1080p video at different frame rates, including 24fps and 60fps for great full HD slow motion. Another reason why I pick this camera is because of it's size. It's so small and light you can easily attach it to a quadcopter, or tape it to a wall, or just stick it in your pocket. It's the smallest DSLR camera at the moment. Lastly it's the image quality and overall functionality. Great options for assisting in video recording. Decent compression using AVCHD codec, etc. If you're just getting into filmmaking and you're not sure what camera to invest in. I would suggest that you get this one!

I was using this camera, and I think I broke my lens. It doesn't attach anymore. I was then thinking of replacing my lens to another one, is there any lens that you would recommend for me for this type of camera?

WestHam66 : Hi Steven- great review. I believe you can configure the controls on the back of the NEX-5R so you have the full exposure triangle at your fingertips at a touch of a button (noticed you were digging thru the menus for aperture, ISO settings etc)...so Navi dial on top for aperture settings, round dial ring on back for shutter speed and the dedicated ISO button on the right of that. I bought this camera when release and still like it. I added a prime Sony 50mm and the pop-in OLED viewfinder which really helps with photography.
ANONYMOUSPLAYER : I was scammed I was suppose to get a Sony a5100 but I was sent a Sony nex 5n
padam19 : I prefer the NEX-5N, the touchscreen is capacitive, which is much better for manual focus lenses, much easier to quickly magnify and nail focus.
Reaon Kaufman : Personally my favorite Nex cameras out the series are the NEX 6 & NEX 7. Thos are great budget a6000 cameras especially the 7 with the mic jack unlike the a6000 but still has a very similar body.
Michael Martinez : BTW Steven, how did you manage yo get great audio quality? Is this audio straight out of the camera or did you tweak it in post?
Michael Martinez : This is coming very popular in mid 2020. Ive purchased one 1 week ago for the same price (120.00 + 9 shipping) I am impressed with the quality coming from this camera in 1080p. The only bad thing about mine is that it is a PAL only and I can only record in 25 or 50 fps which sucks for night shooting, i get that annoying flickering coming from the lights. My tips on getting a better look is to turn down the saturation, sharpness and contrast and add it in post. This camera paired with a sony 10-18 oss and you have a great vlog combo.
