RC Car Restoration | Can I BUILD This Vintage RC Car 1984 Tamiya Grasshopper? (Part 1)

In this RC Car Restoration and Build series, I will take this 1984 Tamiya Grasshopper and restore this vintage rc car back to glory. I recently stumbled upon this cheap rc car, it cost me $10. I will attempt to build this Tamiya Grasshopper with modern electronics and a fresh body. In this video, while I await for parts for this rc car, I will give you a break down of everything wrong with my Tamiya rc.

Talon Vaughn : Mechanical speed controller and resistors. Pretty neat tech for back in the day.
If I found an old rc car with that vintage tech, I'd definitely leave it.

You gotta realize 80s and 90 were the golden age of RC, now days you go to a hobby shop and look at the cars, sure they are crazy fast and sophisticated, but they seem to lack charm.
Chris Taylor : Memories! I had a grasshopper back in the 80s. All futaba servos and radio... I put a Twister motor in it.. Mine was very fast. I think my biggest problem with this was it does not have indipendent rear suspension. I just kept breaking the rear axle.

Santor : You can fix that broken body easy with baking soda and super glue. Glue on some leftover plastic spruce pieces longitudinally first, on the underside, then fill in with baking soda and drop superglue onto it. It will be rock hard. So hard its diffucult to sand smooth after, so best to do a test how this works first, so you get the hang of it. Basically one can build up bodies with missing portions, using thin segments of baking soda super glue.

My technique is to use some plain clear tape, if a portion is just plain missing, to create a backing of sorts, pour baking soda in segments, separated by plastic spruce pieces, and build up with superglue. It becomes insanely strong. The only wrong one can do with it is to apply too much, as its a nightmare to sand/file down if its too thick. But done on the backside of the body, it doesn't really matter.
