Canon PRO-300 vs PRO-10 / Is newer better?

Canon has discontinued and replaced the PRO-10 photo inkjet printer with the PRO-300, a mini PRO-1000 with similar hardware, software, but a slightly smaller maximum paper size (13x19" or A3+, like the PRO-10). The printer itself is unquestionably better than the PRO-10, but what about the PRINTS? Is there truly a qualitative difference when upgrading to the PRO-300?

In this video, I print identical images on identical paper using both the PRO-10 and PRO-300 to see what difference the PRO-300 makes.

drone9 : Interesting. That’s quite a difference and a good showcase for how different the same image can look depending on printer. What I would like to know is whether one can achieve similar or at least much closer look by adjusting the source image when printing with the Pro-10. I would assume that’s possible.
2slo7 : Very well put together video, thank you. I'm about to upgrade to the Pro 300 from the Pro 10 so it was helpful to watch. One thing I would like to know is, can unused ink cartriges from the Pro 10 be used with the Pro 300 or have Canon changed the spec for the newer printer?
Russ Weymouth : I concur with your thoughts regarding the pro 300 - I am very pleased with the print quality. The only difficulty is choosing which photos not to print!
Marcus Mackay : Very interesting video. I’ve been having a terrible problem with my Canon iP8750 which previously printed superb black and white. But since getting a new Mac I’m getting a horrible pink hue on my black and whites. Weirdly if I drop a photo into a PowerPoint and print from there (yes a horrible test I created out of desperation), the hue goes away. I am using Printer manages colours, but I’m going to see if I can work out how to do the ICC mode. I am desperate, so frustrating. On my previous Mac for what ever reason the prints were superb. Old machine an iMac i7 new one is a Max chip machine though I’d be astonished if that’s the issue.
John Wilkinson : I'm sure there are obvious differences between the printers, but I wonder how much the newer ink formula for the Pro-300 works compared to the older formula for the Pro-10?

joel cleare : I have the pro-100. I print for personal use. When I moved from a 5div to the R5 I could tell the difference in the prints as well ! I was impressed that the aged Canon printer was able to show the extra resolution in the R5.
Kevin S : I liked your video. I was surprised that you got the 300 instead of waiting for a 200 because the dye vs pigment design puts them in entirely different categories (as you mentioned). As an enthusiastic amateur, I would have waited for the 200.
Alan Yahnke : I like my pro 100 that I've been using for over 9 years without repairs. Great printer, very dependable. I leave it on all the time. Sometimes after a power outage I have forgotten to turn it back on, if I run a cleaning cycle it's good as new it seems. Apple and Canon don't play nice sometimes so it has required some monkeying around getting them to talk again, but slug your way through it and it will work again. I think I'd try to find a 1000 if I was getting another one. Pigment inks are a pain to work with from my experience so maybe I would just get the 200. I'll use the 100 until I can't any more however.
Timothy Dingman : by September, I was able to find the Pro 200 and inks for somewhat less than the price you were quoted. I couldn't afford the 300 or the pro1,000 and, as much as I like pigment inks for B&W, my experience with clogged nozzels dried up, expensive inks on Epsons has soured me on those choices
nafnaf0 : I agree with your opinions, except I would get the Epson P900 over the Canon PRO-1000, the PRO-1000 is just too old (hopefully a replacement will come out this year or next year). The PRO-200 is the printer most people should buy, it is the one the I have
