Intel Core i7 3960X Extreme Edition LGA2011 6 Core Processor Unboxing & First Look Linus Tech Tips

It's the fastest kid on the block. Need I say more?
One other thing I guess.... It's also the most expensive kid on the block.
Cal. : This cpu is still a beast.
Bottle -RUM : After 5 years my i7 3960x still runs everything like a champ, OC'd @ 4,4 Ghz, i wanted it to last 5 years, worth the €1000 when i bought it.
TheHvk : This was the dream CPU back when I was building my first rig.
karlzhao314 : That's true. I'm very glad that Intel started doing this with SB, because I don't want to spend 1000 dollars on a CPU with overclocking capabilities.
However, I think it's still worth it to get a i7-3930K, but not anything above that. Both the 3960X and the 3970X are basically 3930Ks with higher clock speeds that cost twice as much. However, the 3930K has a pretty big gain of performance over the 3770K.
romefox : @rahmanroni Indeed the Extreme Edition is best suited for workstations and when working with enormous number computation's or rendering super high quality video, there is most certainly a noticeable difference although probably not enough to justify the extra cost. In the case of time crucial processing when minutes matter, the extreme edition cpu's are worth it, other then IMO it isn't! Also the AMD Opteron 6272 series now boasts 16 cores at half the price and it does wonders!

I'm Not Using My Real Name : Kinda cool to see like older cars that older tech is solid and still works!
IIIRattleHeadIII : This is an excellent video demonstrating what I've been saying for years. And that's the performance improvements are way too low and we are getting milked. They are giving us tons of tiny cores, instead of fewer big ones. Selling us server CPUs for the desktop.
The i7 3960x has a die size of 434.72 mm² while the i9 12900k has a die size of 215.25 mm², the former has 6 cores, the later has 16 cores...
Jarithius : Love this new series. Keep at it.
The best Lil Miss Rarity : You can try 1680v2. 8 cores, 16 threads, more cache. Was running this setup for a long time at exactly the same motherboard. Although 24/7 at only 4.4Ghz because I didn't need more. 4,7Ghz was possible but only at like 1.43V.
Enigmatistic : Chris have you ever considered building PCs for viewers at their request and funding? I've only seen a couple other channels doing this but you are far more knowledgeable.
The Ultimate CPU (of 2011) | i7 3960X
Testing the Intel i7-3960X Socket 2011 six core CPU from 2011 in 9 popular and demanding games in 2022.
The i7-3820K review:
The regular desktop i7s from the Sandy Bridge generation were legendary for their performance and overclocking. The lesser-known High End versions of these chips were available up to 6 cores and 12 threads, with 15MB of cache and quad channel memory support. In 2011, nobody needed 6 core CPUs for gaming; in 2022, have things changed enough to make this 130W+ beast relevant?

Xzero79 : I’ve been running a 3960x at 5.1ghz since 2011. Just kept upgrading gpus as I went. My motherboard x79 extreme 11 blew last week. So I guess it’s time for a new setup.
Scurbdubdub : I love these older HEDT platforms. I recently got a i7 5930k for $25 and it is surprisingly still capable in 2022. I was able to get it to 4.4GHz just by adjusting the multiplier in the BIOS. The best part of it is, I got a MSI X99A Godlike for only $150 to go along with it!
Tre Winters : with bf5 running dx12 causes those frametime hitches. run dx11 next test!
The best Lil Miss Rarity : Still have x79 as my second rig. Had 1680v2 for a year or so at 4.7Ghz. Later sold that chip and ended up with 2697v2 at 113bclk. Still plenty of performance.
Beach 2023 : The general conclusion as almost always in these kinds of tests apply to this one as well - still great if you already have the system, but not really anything to get today since it's only a matter of time before it will be considered obsolete and with no viable upgrade path that doesn't include upgrading the entire system.
