@startingpointformedicose1731 : Bcz females have normally less RBC count than males. So, less negative charges on RBC , less repulsions and more chances of sedimentation and thus more ESR. Also Anemia is very common in women that is also the reason

@floopydisc : Hi medicosis! As a rheumatology fellow, I have enjoyed getting a grasp on a few concepts through your videos so thanks! Also as a rheumatology fellow, I do feel I must let you (and the public at large) know that the ESR is most definitely NOT the most useless test around. True, it's non-specific and in most cases, does not add useful knowledge. However, in rheumatology, the combination of the values of ESR and PCR are of inestimable value to distinguish between disease activity, infection, macrophage activation syndrome etc!!
@zoedobbels7159 : Hi, thanks for the video! Can you please explain why leucocytosis and thrombocytosis decrease ESR (is it also the negative charges?). And also, why does cryoglobulinemia decrease ESR (I would think it should have the same consequence as increased globulins)? Thank you!

Acute phase reactants (APRs) are substances that increase in the plasma in case of inflammation, but their plasma level decrease when there is no inflammation (or when the inflammation subsides).

@elaineluther1799 : CRP is by definition, REACTIVE, so it both builds and dissipates rapidly. The sed rate is by nature, SEDENTARY, so it is slow. That's the mnemonic. The supporting facts are that the half-life of CRP is 19 hours, while in contrast, the half life of fibrinogen is FOUR DAYS and the half life of IgG is TWENTY-ONE DAYS!!. Those rouleaux are not going to be able to unstick themselves from each other for a long, long time. I think of CRP as carry-on luggage, and rouleaux as a big stack of luggage that has to be checked.

@alenjtom : Why does macrocytosis cause increased ESR? I think the reason you gave is wrong as larger the cells, the faster it sediments. Hence high ESR. Nonetheless, great video!

@HeatherBDentureDiVa : My sed rate was 70 for a year I have scleroderma which sucks. And now I was diagnosed with many small Pulmonary embolisms. I hate autoimmune diseases
