철강 부산물 ‘슬래그’의 변신…“환경 보호에 앞장” / KBS 2021.08.18.
기후 변화에 대한 위기감이 높아지고 있는 가운데 온실가스 배출이 많은 철강 제조 공정에서는 부산물인 슬래그가 발생하는데요, 이 부산물이 인공어초나 비료로 변신해 해양 생태계 보전이나 친환경 농업에 기여하고 있습니다.
강전일 기자가 보도합니다.
[리포트]
용광로에서 쇳물을 뽑아내고 분리한 부산물 슬래그가 쏟아져 나옵니다.
이 슬래그를 가공한 바다 생태계 회복용 인공어초가 만들어지고 있습니다.
철과 칼슘 등 미네랄 함량이 일반 골재보다 풍부해 해조류가 빨리 자라면서 바다숲 만들기에 안성맞춤이기 때문입니다.
슬래그를 냉각시키고 알갱이로 만든 '규산질 슬래그 비료’는 벼의 광합성을 촉진시키고 줄기를 강하게 만들어 수확량을 증대시킵니다.
[박영수/제철 세라믹 공장장 : "규산 성분이 30%로 높게 함유돼 있습니다. 이 슬래그를 저희가 건조 분쇄한 다음에 동그랗게 구형을 만들어서 농민들이 쓸 수 있게끔 포장 생산을 하고 있습니다."]
이 비료를 뿌린 농경지에서 감자와 옥수수도 재배돼 저소득층 가구에 전달됐습니다.
이 비료는 토양 산성화를 막고 메탄량을 감소시키면서 기후 변화의 주범 온실가스 배출을 줄이는 역할도 합니다.
온실가스 저감이 과제인 포스코는 동남아를 중심으로 규산질 비료 해외 수출에도 적극 나서고 있습니다.
