Marc Jacobs: Between Collections
Marc Jacobs is moving. After living and collecting in an impeccably designed townhouse on Greenwich Village’s Bethune street for over a decade, the fashion icon has found a new canvas in the Frank Lloyd-designed Max Hoffman House of Rye, New York. This November, Sotheby’s is honored to offer an exceptional selection of works from the Collection of Marc Jacobs in our Contemporary Art Evening and Day sales. As he prepares to relocate, the legendary designer joined Sotheby’s Chairman Amy Cappellazzo to explore his eclectic art collection and unique approach to curation. Jacobs has spent the past two decades building an extensive collection of contemporary art with a particular focus on figuration, including remarkable examples from artists like Mike Kelley, John Currin and Urs Fischer. Although initially intimidated with the New York art world, Jacobs developed personal relationships with many of the artists he collected, including Elizabeth Peyton and Karen Kilimnik. angeliqueinhollywood : I sense a lot of vulnerability and anguish inside this man. He doesn't want to sell his collection, but he's terrified. The vaping only temporary numbs the growing fear. Maybe he will find peace in his new house, but like all gilded cages, it will just represent another mental prison for him, as he attempts to fill it up with more stuff in which no longer has any connection to his past.
He doesn't know how to evolve as a designer, and he's tired of looking at patterns and living a life based on temporary highs. There's no one he trusts, love is a game and scattered orgasms, and he's putting on a happy face for the interview, and fills it with meaningless, upbeat chatter so that no one can look inside. Only his eyes reveal the turmoil underneath, he's still that little boy, who came to New York City to be a designer all those years ago.
The interviewer didn't even touch the surface. There's an emotional attachment to every piece he owns, and she completely glossed over it, and instead made it into a name dropping conversation.
