A Novice Repairs: Recapping LG W2361V Monitor

Something a little bit different than usual. I decided to try and repair a TFT that had failed recently, after taking it apart and finding some bulging caps. Apologies for the lack of a proper running dialogue! My inexperience meant my brain was concentrating mostly on the repair and making silly voices :-)
Don Johnson24 : I know that this was posted some time ago, but I had to send my thanks to you, Jenna, for prompting me to go further than just checking that the monitor's internal fuse was not blown. As someone involved in electronics for nearly 50 years, I thought I knew what to look for in faulty power supplies, but I would never have noticed the subtle bulging of the tops of those capacitors without seeing your video. I had exactly those convex tops on four of the capacitors, so replaced all six - as you suggested. I have never been so surprised and pleased to see an electronic device start working again - with such a simple repair. The biggest problem was in getting the control strips located back in the retaining frame, and hooking that metal plate into the power unit cover.
Investigating further on the 'net, I see that this problem is so common that there are kits sold specifically to deal with it.
So, you have my heartfelt gratitude for enabling me to resurrect my £100 monitor at a cost of only around £4. A repair shop wanted £60 to just look at it!
Lloyd Codrington : Wow, I was about to throw four off these monitors in the skip. They've all broken down within a year of each other and although I've had them for 5 years they spent more than two in storage. Proves just how engineered to break the modern tech rolls out of these companies. Long gone are the days when you could open up a garage, find a 50 year old car, add a battery, turn the key and then beg for someone to fetch a defibrillator and stop your heart attack.

Jennralize, you're a star and unless I can find them cheaper at a radioshack type store the kits on eBay are £4 per monitor. And I have the tools so thanks you so much.

Best of wishes.
Lloyd.
Jason : Great job, so jealous.  I had a 37" LG TV that had the same cap problem, power supply had almost died.  I was off on one solder, didn't notice it, turned it on and POP, sizzle, dead.  Your patience is to be admired.
Pirate Skeleton : Make sure you check the rest of the board for any scorch marks. Generally a busted capacitor could cause a short circuit unless it's being used only as a filter in which case the circuits it fed to might not have been exposed to an over-voltage. If you don't have one, I recommend getting yourself a voltmeter, with an ohm-meter and also capacitance meter. This way you can check adjacent solders to ensure there aren't any shorts.
Peter Mulholland : Late to this party, but yep. Repaired so many monitors where the only problem was bad capacitors in the secondary side of the power supply. Nice to see someone having a go at repair instead of replace :)

One Take #136 LG W2361V-PF 중고 사와서 유지보수....

중고로 매입한 제품을 사다가 점검하고 손보는 영상입니다.
요즘은 수리건 보다 매입처리건이 더 많습니다.
황진홍 : 잘보겠습니다.~~

LG W2353V-PF Disassembly / Stand removal

Update: People are asking what I am using now. I have since ditched LG and upgraded to ASUS vesa compatible monitors. Primary: ASUS VA32AQ 32" IPS 1440p https://amzn.to/2ln0Xam — Secondary: ASUS VP239H-P 23" IPS 1080p https://amzn.to/2nwItox

Needed to remove the stand on this unit and couldn't find any info on this. Once I knew how to do it, I decided to make a quick video.
Janet Katz : We appreciated this video. Thanks! So much better than someone saying "just pop off the front frame."
Smuglator : same process also works on the E2360 model (for the most part). Using a "cellphone" prying tool to push the top inwards while pushing the back outwards worked like a charm after unlocking the first little bit! ( don't do it before that though, you will scratch the sides)
CPA_gmail : I would have never figured this out without your video. Who knew mounting a monitor could be such a pain. THANK YOU!
Zeb : I can't thank you enough for this video. We've got an LG Flatron that's switching off at random times and progessively getting worse and I wanted to open it up and check the caps and replace any that look like they're going, probably all of them, but it's been a bitch to get the case open. Until now! :)
Richard O'Brien : Good video, worked for my W2243. Tips: (1) Fairly thin gloves protect your fingers, (2) Plastic levers help, like the ones you get with iFixit, especially round the corners, and cause no damage if you're reasonably careful, (3) no need to fiddle with the wire if you fold the screen onto the frame, (4) work on the sides and top, and the bottom will look after itself when you lift the frame off.
Thanks again.
