Lead is cited as the second most important material to pose a dangerous risk to the human body. It is a highly toxic metal. However, many are unaware that cosmetics, batteries, canned beverages, paint and stationery in daily life contains high levels of lead. Severe lead poisoning can lead to paralysis, abnormal behavior and diminished IQ. Recently, urethane tracks in schools have been found to contain excess amounts of lead, leading local departments of education to consider their removal. Daycare centers and private academies are regularly sterilizing toys and stationery, and painting walls with eco-friendly paint to reduce exposure to lead during developmental years. We examine our unconscious exposure to lead in the environment, and explore ways to prevent lead poisoning.
