larken wen : ahh I teared up when I saw you flip the postcard at the end of the video and it said, "Present – to be continued" because a huge theme, I felt like, throughout the photobook, was this sense of the present being SO surreally and miraculously full of joy and warmth and security that it feels almost like a dream or fantasy that can be snatched away at any second, instead of something real and permanent – from the golden-hour lighting in the hotel pool to the members' matching Peter-Pan-evoking outfits toward the end to the mix of nostalgia and excitement channeled by the wedding-style suits and heist-ready helicopters in the beginning...it's such a high-quality photobook, and I'm amazed that effort was put into even the graphic design (i.e. 3:32 reflecting the up-and-down jostling of a camera running to keep up with EXO as they race down the hall, using uneven photo sizing and up-and-down zigzag layout) to bring a sense of motion, movement, and speed to our eyes' tracking of the photos. (It really makes the photos look alive, like the most memorable instant-frames in a dreamlike movie that get burned into our memories because they're SO vividly able to capture everything precious about that time, place, and our feeling for them.


10:02 is a great example of this use of photo layout, where the shots of Suho suspended briefly in mid-air toss are positioned at the peaks of the "zig-zag" formed by the photos. And the moments where Suho is lowered closest to the ground are at the bottoms/troughs of the zig-zag! The beginning and the end of the "tossing Suho" memory are also represented by larger photos, so our eyes can linger on those the longest, "framing" the entire sequence between those two strongly imprinted moments.


Also the beginning helicopter scenes were fine affff and all, but it wasn't until the "quietly passionate visual memorization of the sunlight-cast shadows on the floor" shot at 2:19 that I breathed a sigh of relief, because that's when I knew Present;Gift wasn't going to be another "Tempo" photobook. Sooo I didn't feel satisfied with the physical Tempo album, and only part of it was the shittily "vertically opening" orientation of the spine. If you compare Tempo with any version of The War (or Shinee's Odd ver. B, or Red Velvet's best graphic design albums, Red Summer + Summer Magic) or CBX's Blooming Days, it's clear that the Tempo albums are just "bound-together postcard-sized photos organized by member" while the other examples are FULLY integrated book-viewing experiences where the graphic design itself adds personality, interpretation, and degrees of irony to the often self-serious photos. So I'm amazed and grateful that Present;Gift managed to get the storytelling graphic design/layout it deserves.


For example, all the gorgeously detailed focus on scenery, objects, and locations WITHOUT the members is so evocative of the restlessness and wistfulness you can feel when you know that a wonderful memory with someone that you'll never forget is coming to an end soon – you start intensely memorizing idle details in the space where it all took place, not even on purpose, because when you're around this person who means so much to you, every last detail has to be recorded, and you won't skimp on committing any point to memory. So the affectionate documentation of the coffee table at 3:02 where EXO Vocal Line messed around, or the camera's amazement at the beauty of the sky and water at 3:49, all add so much emotional attachment to the members and the vacation. The camera's gaze feels alive and full of longing for closeness with the guys, whereas in the "Tempo" photobook the camera just feels like a tool used to snap glamor shots of EXO in "mad-max"-style costumes.


This is all to say that Present;Gift is the storytelling photobook that I'm still salty "Tempo" wasn't, and of course it costs a million dollars w/ fast shipping rn, crY. It evokes dreamlike nostalgia but also excitement for the future with its sense of speed, motion, and activity – the nostalgia is also really subtly done, which I really appreciate. Definitely not as in-your-face as Girls Generation's Holiday Nights album, which was literally just ancient behind-the-scenes photos in polaroid frames spread across the pages in a "scrapbook" layout concept lmao. Here, whoever put this together used only new photos, all HD, all in perfectly balanced/graded lighting, MINIMAL blank pages (even when they have genuine artistic value, I'm just so enraged by those my giant muscles start exploding from my green skin), and lovely big-big-big photos (god I hated those teeny zoomed-out photos in f(x)'s Red Light, even though it DID have an artistic purpose). I'm so amazed and now I want to cry because they didn't put NEARLY this much effort into Tempo's photobook last year, or even EXO in general (no winter album, really??)...this is long as ffff, but anyone have similar thoughts about the graphic layout of this photobook versus the Tempo ones?? As y'all can see, I have plenty of salty thoughts about this topic...
