Adam Savage's Favorite Tools: Pin Gauges!
Adam looks upon the landscape of pin gauges to dive back into an examination of metrology (the science of measurement!) and demonstrates how he uses this set of steel calibration equipment in his machining projects. They're some of the most useful tools for chasing zeroes in the shop!

@FullSendPrecision : You can also stack the gauge pins to measure holes larger than you have pins for. You can stack two and add the dimensions.... There are some formulas to put 3 together in a pyramid shape and measure pretty big holes with your larger pins!
@baathwater8442 : these videos are literally like a show and tell for adults and i love it
@davidriley7287 : Hi Adam, I just thought I would let you know that when using callipers to measure the distance from the edge of a part to your gauge pin you should use the step at the head of the callipers instead of the step on the tail end, the tail step is good for getting into small spaces but the step on the back of the head gives you a much more stable platform when getting your measurements.
@Tinmans21 : I work in a metrology lab and I get to certify all the gages you mentioned! Thanks for giving the metrology world some love Adam!!
Gage Pins and How to Use Them
Here's a quick primer on gage pins and how to use them to measure small holes, calibrate your micrometers, and use them as Go/No Go gages. I also talk about the relative quality of the import sets versus the name brand sets. Enjoy!

@robertburns2415 : Another way to use them into stack them side by side. Say you needed to measure a .375 hole + or - .001 you could use the .186+.188 = .374 and see if they fit. Then use .186 + .190 = .376 to see if they don't fit. This way your set can be used to go to .499. Don't forget your .0002 minus tolerance stacks.
@mikesmith1181 : Excellent video! Thanks for the explanation. I'm currently taking a GeoTol class and I've never seen a GO/NO GO set used before.
@sixhundred3score6 : I have a few of these sets at work. Great video. Thank you.
@ryt2carry : Thank you. I saw a huge set of these, for sale and I just didn’t know what they were for.
@E.L.RipleyAtNostromo : Very helpful and informative, thank you.
