Motorola Walkie talkie TLKR T5 Review
This is a video review of the Motorola TLKR T5 walkie talkie set (2 handsets c/w charging dock). I did this review back in 2010 which seems to be a long time ago and yet I am still using the same set of walkie talkies! They have lasted 7 years so far which is great.
You can still buy them online from the likes of Ebay or you can have a look at the more up-to-date versions of the Motorola TLKR range on Amazon.
Despite their age, they are still very effective at what they do. Their main disadvantage comes with inner city/residential areas with their obstructive buildings blocking signal. The advertised range in 2010 was 6k. As I mention in the video - I managed to achieve approximately 5k from house to hilltop and 500m in a residential area but on both occasions the maximum range was achieved with increasing static/background interference. I am confident these walkie-talkies can meet the 6k advertised but that would be more easily achieved over open water (no obstructions and/or building to absorb or obstruct the signal) or from hill to hill - across open land.
These walkie-talkies came with a belt clip - I don't recommend using it unless you are happy with it falling off regularly - I recommend an attachment e.g. a lanyard to keep it with you or else keep it in your pocket, not on your belt!
The pack came with battery pack and charging dock station.
One very positive feature is the ability to 'call' one handset with the other (like using a mobile phone but quicker) - this was availed of within three days of purchase when one of the kids dropped their 'set at a park and I was able to 'call' the other 'set from my own. A persons answered and I was able to meet up with them in the park and retrieve the handset - excellent feature.
Standard buttons include volume control and channel selection. Eight main channels with several 'sub-channels' within each main channel - a total of some 121 channels/sub-channels to choose from. this is an excellent feature - if you and your party are using one channel you can change channels or move to a sub-channel within that channel should someone else come on or already be there talking.
Can also be used as a baby monitor - you basically leave it on by the baby and you can listen from the connected set for sounds made.
Has a timer feature - you can set it to turn off after x-amount of minutes to save power if not being used in idle mode.
Another good feature is 'voice-control' - useful as a hands-free set - you talk - it picks up the sound and transmits instead of having to press the transmit button.
Looks - as stated in vid - looks a bit like a chunky, funky mobile phone - useful if you want to be a bit more discreet and not draw attention to yourself talking into it as opposed to the generic black, block rectangular look of 'standard' business-use walkie-talkies with their vertical aerial on top for all to see.
Back in 2010 this set cost £38 for the pair - that price has gone up a tad since then!
Overall I give this set 8/10.
